BritBox Streaming: Death in Paradise & Agatha Christie

BritBox continues to provide hours and hours of entertainment all with a variety of accents, servings of tea, visits to local pubs, and degrees of emotions. I am fascinated by British humor in shows like the classic Open All Hours (1973-1985) and it’s sequel Still Open All Hours (2013-2019) with David Jason (A Touch of Frost) in the hilarious lead. Many dramas, first introduced to me on PBS or A&E networks, are now available for anytime viewing, binging, and rewatching like Silks, Cracker, and Silent Witness.

BritBox has a wide variety of shows and movies available for members at a reasonable fee (monthly $6.99; annual special $69.99). There is always something to watch for any level of Anglophile from iconic comedies, dramas, and mysteries to new, fresh out of Covid restrictions series, movies, and documentaries. It’s always exciting when current favorites, like Shakespeare & Hathaway, make it back with the cast intact, but I’m ready to “crow” when I find a gem that offers intrigue and a surprising twist, like Life on Mars and its sequel Ashes to Ashes.>

AcornTV is one of my favorite go-to options when elsewhere is full of reality and reruns. For a reasonable fee (monthly $5.99 or special annual deal $59.99) members have access to hours and hours of entertaining series, engaging movies, informative documentaries, and even fun game shows from decades past or just uploaded. As a passionate Anglophile, I get a daily, sometimes multiple times a day, dose of accents, references to cups of tea, and gorgeous settings from the coast and the highlands to the Cotswolds and gritty urban streets. I always find something new, but my favorite are the detective shows like these new Acorn Originals…The Chelsea Detective and Harry Wild.

Hallmark Movies & Mysteries has premiered a new signature mystery series starring a pair of Hallmark regulars: Nikki Deloach and Andrew W. Walker. The two have partnered before, so their connection is one they’ve perfected. The Curious Caterer series is based on the Goldy Bear (later Goldy Schultz) Culinary Mystery books by Diane Mott Davidson which once again have provided a fun, clever, and entertaining cozy.

For a very reasonable fee (monthly $5.99 or annual special $59.99) members get access to a wide variety of current and classic comedies, dramas, mysteries, documentaries, and even foreign language gems. Either through a web browser, like Safari, or their free app, enjoy the best video and audio quality on any device. I enjoy the control with pause, reverse or fast forward, and one special feature, I personally enjoy, is the closed caption button providing the text for the dialogue.

Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: Haunted By Murder

Aurora Teagarden is the twenty-something, red-headed cozy sleuth from Charlaine Harris popular novels, and in 2015, she became the iconic figure in eighteen telemovies on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. By occupation, “Roe” is a librarian at the Lawrenceton Public Library, by passion, she is an active member of the Real Murders Club for true crime enthusiasts, and by complication, she’s the thorn in the side of law enforcement and the bane of many a killer. Aurora’s best friend Sally Allison, also a member of the club, is a reporter for the local newspaper and often Roe’s reluctant investigative sidekick.
