I have always loved Greek Mythology so ever since I first saw the preview for Immortals I was determined to go and so was my 16-year-old son. So this weekend we headed to the movie theater to join the crowd of people doing the same. 
I have to say while it was okay, I was a bit disappointed. My son may have put it best—there were a lot of great fight scenes and blood and gore tied together with kind of a loose plot. The story opens with Theseus, a young peasant who only has his mother and an old man who has taken him under his wing and taught him to be a warrior. Very quickly the story takes us to a battle with the ruthless King Hyperion who wants to destroy humanity and believes if he can find this special bow he cannot be beaten. King Hyperion invades Theseus village very early in the story and takes him hostage, where Theseus meets the Virgin Oracle who sees a vision about Theseus and the bow.
While the god Zeus has chosen Theseus to fight Hyperion and trained him himself in the guise of the old man, he does not allow the other gods to interfere in the human battle in any way with threat of death if they do. My favorite was Zeus, played by a new favorite of mine Luke Evans, who was also in Three Musketeers. I would have loved to see more of him and the Immortals but perhaps the movie would have been better titled Mortals as you see very little of the gods. I did also enjoy Henry Cavill as Theseus and must admit to constantly wondering how he was going to look as the new Superman.
If you don’t like blood and gore this movie is not for you as the biggest percentage of the movie is just that. There is also a brief bit of nudity in one scene. I think there was a lot of potential here with the Greek mythology, but they kind of hurried through the plot to get to the fighting. The movie also didn’t have a satisfying ending, though it definitely set things up for a sequel.
So while we did both enjoy it, it could have been so much more. It certainly didn’t have the typical good feeling you have after seeing your average hero movie.
Rated R for sequences of strong bloody violence, and a scene of sexuality.

It’s probably one of the best-looking films of the whole year (yet, I still haven’t seen Tree of Life) and the action is awesome and in-you-face which is something I always like. The story dragged on a bit and I couldn’t help but think that if the writing was a tweaked a little better, this would have definitely been a very solid film. Instead it was just fun and pretty to look at. Good review.
