If you’re looking for a fun sci-fi action flick to go see I would recommend In Time starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, which just opened this weekend.
In Time is set in a world where the currency is time. You only age to 25 and then you have one year on your time clock. Unless you can earn, steal or borrow more time you die when your clock runs out. Timberlake’s character Will Salas suddenly finds himself with a lot of extra time thanks to a stranger and sets out on an adventure that turns into something much more. During his adventure, he ends up on the run with a rich young girl played by Seyfriend, and ends up changing the way she sees the world. This movie is very much a commentary on our world and how the dispersion of money often seems unfair—with some having way more than they need and many others not having enough—but in their world it’s time not money.
It was a little bizarre seeing people of the same age playing other’s parents and grandparents, but in a world where no one ages past 25. I guess that’s the way it would be. There are some interesting twists and turns to the plot, but I don’t want to spoil them for you.
The basic premise is interesting and makes you think—like many a good sci-fi movie or TV show. I really liked the casting, as it was full of faces you kind of know, but don’t know well. I hope to see much more of these young actors in the future. I’m also quickly becoming a fan of Timberlake as an actor. One of my favorite characters was the Time Keeper played by Batman’s Scarecrow Cillian Murphy. I also loved finally seeing Angel’s Connor, Vincent Kartheiser, in something new and seeing Chuck’s Matt Bomer as well—wish we had seen more of Bomer’s character as it was one of the most interesting ones in the movie, despite his brief appearance.
I would have to say overall the plot was a bit formulaic, but well done. In Time did what it was supposed to do—provided some great action, suspense and conflict, and it made you think a little about the imbalance in our own society.
Rated PG-13 for violence, some sexuality and partial nudity, and strong language.
