This week I am reviewing two more mystery manga from Yen Press. There couldn’t be two more different manga mysteries to review at the same time—one is very dark and hard-boiled involving hit men, detectives, and cats; the other, while also dark, involves young adults moving to a new town, attending a new school, and discovering what might be a monster, or perhaps a ghost.

Hard-Boiled Stories From the Cat Bar by Yourei Ono

Amazon description: The familiar scents of gunpowder and kitty litter…

When hardened men with a soft spot for felines look for a haven, they come to Kitty and Me, a bar with a select clientele and one ironclad rule: When inside, do not dare harm the cats that call it home. Here, the hitman known as Undertaker finds himself in the unenviable situation of mourning the recent loss of his beloved pet, Cheriko…and discovering that his next target is a fellow cat lover. But the concrete jungle isn’t always so courteous as to wait outside, and the bloody truth about Undertaker’s latest job is knocking at the door.

This was a dark and twisted story of a hitman, a detective, and a very unusual cat bar. It was the idea of these violent men coming together in a cat bar because of their love of cats that made me want to pick this one up and is what made this story very unique. I also love the cover! If you enjoy a hard-boiled mystery, and you love cats, be sure to check this one out. As far as I can tell this is a one-off, but perhaps there are more stories about the cat bar coming in the future.

Glitch Vol 1 by Shima Shinya

Amazon description: Siblings Minato and Akira Lee have moved to a new town, and they’re expecting things to be different? but not this different! Ghostly figures tower over and pass through buildings, drawing no reaction from the locals, some of whom appear far from normal themselves. When Akira spots a strange creature outside her window, she and her new friends organize a search. If no one else can explain the uncanny appearances, the investigation club will get to the bottom of it!

This one is different than most of the mystery manga I have reviewed from Yen Press as it is more teen-focused, as most of the others tended to be more adult oriented. Glitch has an interesting spooky story that I look forward to continuing to follow. I am very curious to know what these glitches are and why not everyone can see them. If you are looking for a spooky sci-fi kind of manga, I recommend picking this one up.

Vol 2 is out and Vol 3 will be out in 2024.
