There’s a New Pizza Place in Town

There’s a new place in town to grab a pizza and a few other savory treats on a Friday night—or any day of the week for that matter. The Pirate’s Den opened its doors recently this summer and is welcoming patrons who want to satisfy their hunger pangs with delicious pizzas, sandwiches or sizzling chicken wings. I stopped by recently to take home a pizza and wings, and had a chance to chat with owner Victor Villacaña about the new restaurant venture.

One of the library branches where I work is the Sunnyside Regional Library at E. Kings Canyon Rd. and Clovis Avenue in Fresno. In that shopping center, a change was made this year. Sunnyside Pizza was out, and something new was in the wind…Chicago’s Pizza With A Twist.

My pizza arrived in the little Italian restaurant and looked tempting. Fair to say I'm not usually a pizza lover, but having exhausted the somewhat limited menu of pasta dishes on earlier visits, I decided to take the plunge. The first hot bite was a howling success, followed by a healthy chug of wine. Halfway through the second bite, I knew I'd made a terrible mistake. The best mental description at the time was, "It tastes like a used litter box dipped in the Great Salt Lake." The anchovies! Needless to say, I carefully removed each one, leaving no trace behind.
