Marty was a character in search of his own play, and Marty’s Turn is that play. Marc Gonzalez created Marty as a minor character for another script, but he was so loved by readers and actors that he gets his own chance to be the focus in the Fresno Rogue Performance Festival’s Hart's Haven.

The idea for this play came from a full-length play I've been working on where the supporting character Marty dominated the script even though that play doesn't revolve around him. The original full-length play is my "Covid play," and centers around a firefighter's journey from childhood to promotion, featuring the people who helped him along the way.

Marc Gonzalez has been a part of the local theatre scene for some time in various different ways—actor, director, choreographer, theatre reviewer, and now playwright. Recently, he presented a staged reading of his latest play Station Two and I was honored to be present. Despite the current Covid protocols that had the entire cast wearing masks, the heart and story of the play came through, and I look forward to the day when Marc produces a full production of this show.

About three years ago I got the idea to write a one-man show. I had been reviewing and attending Rogue Festival performances for a few years, and since I also did theatre, I figured why not give it a try? It wasn’t until a year or so later I started formulating the structure and content of what a one-man show about me would look like.
