Father’s Garden

by Maria Ruiz

In 1947, Dad was transferred to Fort Riley, Kansas. He bought a house in Junction City with an empty lot next door. Here, he dug, planted, seeded and tended a vegetable garden, fifteen feet wide by twenty feet long. He lovingly watched as his corn, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, potatoes and squash plants came up. Every night, after work, he would pull the hose out and walking up and down the rows, would water his little jewels.

The Smurfs: Movie Review

by Sheryl Wall

The Smurfs was a popular cartoon when I was a kid and I was excited to see them come out with a current movie. It was a fun introduction to Smurfs for my 2 year old daughter as well. The movie is about how Clumsy Smurf accidentally leads Gargamel into their village. As they try to run away Clumsy Smurf and a few others, including Papa and Smurfette, fall through a portal that is only open on a Blue Moon in which Gargamel and his cat Azrael follow.

Winnie the Pooh: Movie Review

by Sheryl Wall

The Winnie the Pooh movie is preceded by a short animated film about Nessie. It’s a cute story about the Loch Ness Monster and her best friend MacQuack, who is a rubber duck. Their home in a pond is overtaken by a golf course and so they set out to find a new home. I always enjoy it when they have the short films before the movie. They are a fun addition.

Dinuba Lanes Bowling Alley

by Amanda Hager

Armen Majarian is the current owner of Dinuba Lanes bowling alley in Dinuba. He has been the owner since 2004 and in the years since he has provided the community with great bowling entertainment. As an employee myself of Dinuba Lanes, I have seen the immense amount of fun people have when they visit the bowling alley. To watch the families bowl and compete against one another is what keeps the bowling alley alive and well. It is a great and fun way to enjoy time with friends and family, especially on rainy days when other activities may be limited.

Yankee Stadium

by Margaret Mendel

A give-away day at Yankee Stadium is a pretty special occasion though quite a few trinkets get handed out during the baseball season. I’m sure that those folks who attend the games regularly must have a large collection of bobble head dolls, beach towels with the Yankee logo, cold cup sleeves, key rings; really there’s no end to the variety of merchandise that is handed out periodically.
