As a mystery fan and writer myself, the name of Edgar Allan Poe is of great importance as he is the father of the American detective novel. So when I heard there was going to be a movie coming out where Edgar himself was a character I was intrigued.
When I was asked to do a review of the Italian restaurant Valentino's, I was excited because many family members have experienced their food both at its new location in downtown Reedley and when the restaurant resided on Manning across from Savemart.
On my trip to Ireland several years ago we landed at the Dublin airport in weather that the Irish refer to as a soft day. By this they mean a rainy day. It was an early morning arrival and the dining hall in the hotel was closed. So, we fell onto our bed in the small but efficient room and took a nap.
Director Ryan Pullen describes Dead Man’s Cell Phone as a dark comedy about our need to connect in a digital world. Pullen identifies Jean as the central character who shows growth throughout the play “transitioning from making connections virtually to making them interpersonally.” Pullen defines the remaining characters as archetypes of how we insolate ourselves from all the digital options available through technology. “As an example, Dwight focuses on the real world through paper.”

One of my favorite memories of my grandmother is that of her bottomless cookie jar. Grandma’s cookie jar was always full of snicker doodles, chocolate chip, peanut butter, or my favorite, Oatmeal Crunchies. The old black, crockery jar was shaped like a bean pot and had painted red cherries arching across its front. It sat on the counter just inside the kitchen door, which made it handy for marauding grandchildren. My brother, Bill, was caught red-handed one day and dropped the cookie jar lid on the floor, where it broke in half.

An escaped convict, who is a former cop in jail for stealing a famous diamond, ends up out on a ledge at a hotel. A police psychologist (Elizabeth Banks) works to try and talk him down, unaware at first who he is as he registered at the hotel under an alias. The psychologist has her own story as well--she’s been in a downward spiral after failing to keep a cop from jumping off a bridge and she’s surprised when the man on a ledge asks for her by name. At the same time that he is on the ledge, across the street a major diamond heist is in progress.
Kate Beckinsale returns as vampire heroine Selene, in the fourth installment of the Underworld series. After the events of movie two (three was a prequel) humans have become aware of both the vampires and lycans (werewolves) and have begun and all out war to eradicate the species. The movie picks up when Selene and Michael the vampire/lycan hybrid try to escape and are discovered and blown up. While Selene is captured and held captive for twelve years, Michael’s fate is left unknown.
Cookies are great to bake any time of the year, but my fondest memories of cookies are those my mother made for Christmas. The smell of butter and sugar, cinnamon, and ginger snaps will be forever embedded in my memory of the Holidays. Mom would begin to bake her cookies a couple of weeks before anyone else in the neighborhood even thought about getting started with making the holiday treats.
