Once upon a time, there was a little girl who loved to play “store.” Fascinated with cash registers and display counters (as well as the Wizard of Oz), she dreamed of someday running a retail establishment of her own.
It’s October. I know this is The Great Food Search, but do you really want to hear me tell of delicate dining? Of course not! You want the ooey-gooey, sticky-licky sweets, the sugar-laden and calorie-unconscious! Let’s go satisfy your sweet tooth!
Valentine’s Day is almost here, and there are a lot of wonderful local places where you can shop for that special Valentine’s Day gift. We chatted with some of the local shops to see what they had to offer. Some of the items needed to be ordered way ahead of time so for those make a note for next year, but there are many other wonderful things you still have time to go purchase for that special Valentine!

Recently a new shop opened in Downtown Reedley called Sweet Destination. I went in to check it out and was delighted by what I saw! This place is so charming and filled with so many unique items. The owner, Shelly Henderson, shared with me that the theme of "destination" is showcased throughout the store as she showed me their tables with street sign tabletops (Shelly's co-owner and husband Mike built the tables), an old luggage cart, their counter is made out of a 100 year old door, and even their business cards are shaped like luggage tags!
My dad was crazy about chocolate covered cherries and every Valentines Day my sisters and I would go to the local drugstore and buy him a box of these sweet treats. Mom, a frail, delicate woman, favored milk chocolate with nuts or dark chocolate with coconut and we gave her Hershey or Mounds bars, all of which she ate sparingly, nibbling the bar as though she were a bird pecking at a treasured crust of bread. Nothing says “I Love You” like something made of chocolate.
