This week we are profiling local artist Carrie Taves, who was born and raised in Reedley. She is also involved in the local charity When I Grow Up.
By definition, a mixtape is “a compilation of music, typically from multiple sources, recorded onto a medium,” and acts as a fitting metaphor for the work of Visalia artist Zachary Bland, both literally and figuratively. His work often involves a marriage of multiple mediums, much like a mixtape, and traces its origins from the object itself. Kings River Life spoke with Bland about mixed media, the vibrant Visalia art scene, and how art is a love letter.
The local ValleyPBS held its first art showcase for ArtHop in its downtown studio with the spotlight on local artist and author, the legendary Larry Hill. Larry has been one of the most important artistic figures in the Central Valley and has helped put the art scene on the map. He displayed twenty-five abstract paintings of his that were aligned up and down the halls and office rooms of the building. People ranging from casual observers to associates, friends, and family attended this gallery which is one out of many for Larry but the first ever for ValleyPBS.

Over the past several weeks, students and art department faculty have been buzzing over the COS Art Gallery’s last exhibition of the spring semester, our 2019 Juried Student Exhibition. This exhibition will feature art created by COS art students in a number of different categories in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works. The exhibition is free and open to the public starting Tuesday, April 9 and runs through Friday, May 3. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, April 11 from 5-7 p.m., with the awards ceremony starting at 5:30 p.m.
The brilliant Dutch artist, Vincent van Gogh, struggled to have his paintings shown during his lifetime. He lived in poverty for his art and was not commercially successful, but if he were alive and living in the Central Valley in 2019, he’d be happy to know local art is appreciated and valued here in Tulare County.
The first exhibition of the spring semester in the COS Art Gallery will be Threading the Lines, an exhibition of custom-made costumes, concept sketches, photographs and footage from the COS Theater Department’s production of Picasso at the Lapin Agile, a comedy by Steve Martin.
