Early morning in Hawaii is so peaceful…the colorful sunrise, swaying palms, gentle movement of the ocean waves, but…Shhhark! Kailani Pope decides to get a couple of surfing runs in before heading off to work at the Dolphin Bay Resort, but one shark fin leads to another, leads to a dozen. Quietly she watches the early morning breakfast frenzy near shore, and so does Sandy, her barking dog. When the sharks head off, Lani slowly heads into shore, but Sandy leaps into the surf and drags in…an arm! The tattoo is unique to a food truck vendor, Blaze Whitmore, whose undercutting the competition may have gotten him served up as lunch!

Lani, of course, can’t leave the investigation to the professionals, even if the professional is her own brother, so she and cowboy boyfriend, Luke, decide to investigate the mystery, now dubbed murder by the police. Together they set off to interrogate other food truck vendors, but Komo, who had a serious problem with the victim and his effect on the delicate cooperation between all the vendors, has gone missing. book

The police have Komo as the main ‘person of interest,’ but the idea of him being a second victim has to be considered. Additionally, Lani and Kekoa (BFF, cousin, and roommate) are very concerned that a condo neighbor, Shredder, a mystery man himself, was uncharacteristically seen at the resort visiting a suspicious guest, one they have deemed a ‘Fed’ type. Lani’s curiosity goes into top gear as she adds a bit of her own spying on this stranger. Are these mysteries connected?

I am such a fan of Kathi Daley’s Sand and Sea Hawaiian Mystery series, and again with book 5 she has written an exciting “I didn’t see that coming” adventure. Longtime fans will be thrilled with the twists, but newbies will not be left out because there is enough background to make them feel welcome to the series.

Kathi continues to write Lani as a very capable strong-willed woman, but her unofficial detective status and curiosity can too often put her in danger…that makes this series truly exciting! From the first appearance of sharks to interrogating various food truck vendors to the very, very big twist at the end, this mystery is engaging throughout. Lani’s relationship with her family is also explored, as we get to know more about her mother and her ‘empty nest’ syndrome. All in all it is a great reading adventure, and with Hawaii as the backdrop, this has become a favorite series of mine.

Of course one of Kathi Daley’s signature additions is her recipes which fans continue to compile in their personal cookbooks. She adds some of her own goodies like Banana Cheese Pie (WOW!), Supereasy Hawaiian Pie, and Pineapple Upside-down Cake. She also puts out an ’all call’ on her recipe exchange site on Facebook for fans to submit recipes like Margarita Pie, Aggression Cookies, Vanilla Cream Pie, and Pecan Turtle Candy (Perfect!). It’s a ‘two-fer!’ Fans get to enjoy an exciting mystery AND wonderful treats for book clubs, church pot lucks, or office coffee breaks.
