Nestled in the heart of the Central Valley, Children’s Musical Theaterworks transported audiences this weekend to the enchanting world of Austria with their delightful rendition of The Sound of Music. Under the direction of Eric Estep, this production breathed new life into a beloved classic, gracing the stage of the Fresno Memorial Auditorium Theatre now through December 10.

From the moment the house lights dimmed, it was evident that this performance was a testament to the talent residing in our local community. The Central Valley’s budding actors shimmered, showcasing their talent and dedication, capturing the essence of their characters with heartwarming authenticity. The cast’s enthusiasm was infectious, with the audience bobbing along to each beloved song from the Nuns of Nonnberg Abbey to the Von Trap Children.

What truly elevated this rendition was the cleverness and efficiency displayed in the props and costumes. The stage came alive with the seamless transitions and skillful use of props that transported us effortlessly from the abbey to the Austrian Alps. The detail in the costumes evoked the charm of the period, enhancing the authenticity of the production.

However, it was the symphony of voices that truly stole the spotlight. The ensemble cast wove a tapestry of melodic talent that filled the auditorium. Each note was a testament to the dedication of these performers. It was clear that countless hours of practice went into hitting each beautiful note.

Amidst this musical mosaic, one voice stood out with dazzling beauty. Emily Swalef, portraying the spirited Maria Rainer, enraptured the audience with her vocal talent and stage presence. Her portrayal was a masterclass in capturing the essence of Maria, infusing the character with a blend of innocence, determination, and boundless optimism. Emily’s vocal ability soared, effortlessly delivering the iconic melodies of “The Sound of Music” and “My Favorite Things” with a stirring resonance that lingered in the hearts of the audience.
