I have always enjoyed Marilyn Meredith’s Deputy Tempe Crabtree series, so I was happy to hear that there was a new one out.

In River Spirits, the latest book in this delightful series, a movie is being filmed on the Bear Creek Indian Reservation and the crew is creating havoc on the reservation by trespassing on sacred ground and not following the rules established to allow them to film there. Deputy Crabtree is asked to keep an eye on them and try to keep them out of trouble, but when one of the actor’s is murdered it becomes a murder investigation as well. The director of the movie keeps pushing all of the boundaries and decides to change the whole movie to make it about the Hairy Man (sort of like Big Foot, except important to the Native Americans on the Bear Creek Reservation and very real), and is determined to get real footage of him. As Tempe investigates the murder, she learns more about Hollywood than she would have liked, and finds it full of back stabbing, secrets, egos, and petty jealousies. book

Marilyn always provides her readers with an interesting mystery, but what I love most about her books are the interesting characters, and especially the relationship between Tempe and her pastor husband Hutch. Tempe has been learning more and more about her Native American background, along with the more spiritual side of that background, and this has at times caused conflict between the couple–and yet they always seem to be able to work through it. I love their very equal relationship, and Hutch is very much involved in helping Tempe out this time around. We also get to see her son again, and he brings them some surprising news.

If you are looking for a quick, enjoyable read, with wonderful characters, don’t miss the latest mystery from Marilyn.

  1. I’ve been wanting to start the Deputy Crabtree series, Lorie, and this review has helped push it up higher in my reading pile.

The characters sound like people I’ve met and it’s great to have a main character with a strong relationship that adjusts and grows along with the series.
