Associate Professor Akira Takatsuki’s Conjecture, Vol. 1 by Mikage Sawamura (Author), Katelyn Smith (Translator), Toji Aio (Artist), Arbash Mughal (Letterer) is the first in a supernatural mystery manga series released by YenPress on August 29, 2023. This is also available as a light novel.

Amazon Description:
Naoya Fukamachi’s ability to unerringly detect lies has left him friendless and isolated all his life. It certainly isn’t helping him meet new people in college. But when he catches the interest of the handsome but eccentric associate professor of folklore studies, Akira Takatsuki, he finds himself with a part-time job as a research assistant in charge of common sense, on a mission to help catalog the supernatural!

Fukamachi’s ability came to him as a child when he took part in a festival that changed his life forever—but was it real or just a dream? Knowing when people are lying has made life very difficult and left him very cynical about people. Now at college, he is trying to figure out what classes to take. When he checks out Professor Akira Takatsuki’s folklore studies, he finds that his life changes again. As the professor’s research assistant, he is now finding his gift very useful in uncovering the truth as he goes with the professor to check out possible supernatural events. Will he possibly also find out the truth behind what happened to him along the way?

I loved this manga—it is the perfect blend of supernatural and mystery—though, in this case, the mysteries abound. How did Fukamachi get his powers? Who is the mysterious and eccentric Professor Akira Takatsuki, and why is he so fascinated by the supernatural? Is the supernatural world real?

I can’t wait for the next volume, which comes out on November 21! The characters are interesting and have a great chemistry. I am dying to find out what is really going on with Fukamachi’s ability and what happened to him as a child, and I feel like the professor has some secrets of his own. I would love to see this series turned into an anime.
