It’s October, which means it’s time to play some spooky games. Horror is a genre in video games I have grown to love over the years. It allows the player to be fully immersed and participate in them instead of just being a bystander watching it all happen. While that might seem terrifying to many, it is an exhilarating feeling.

The first horror game I am going to recommend is Until Dawn. Until Dawn features a group of eight playable characters, who are staying at a family cabin for the weekend on the year anniversary of the tragic death of two of their friends, Hannah and Beth Washington. As the night begins, a terrifying man appears at the cabin, and everyone must survive all of the horrible things that happen to them until help can arrive at dawn. Any of the eight playable characters can die, and it is up to you, the player, to save as many as possible. The variety of who can live or die allows for many different game endings and replayability.

video gameThe next horror game recommendation is Resident Evil 7. Resident Evil is a famous and beloved horror series, and any of the games in the series would be fun to play for October. Still, the scariest and most exciting horror experience goes to Resident Evil 7. Ethan, a young man who lost his wife three years ago, suddenly receives an email from his wife which discloses her location and asks him to come to rescue her. He arrives and is horrified to see a run-down house and no sign of his wife. He journeys through the house to find her and comes across a terrifying family of zombies. The game features complicated but fun puzzles and intense battles with each family member, all while trying to hide and survive.

My final recommendation is quite different from the other two, and that is Visage. While the full game does not have an official release date, the first two chapters, which feature several gameplay hours, have been released. The first two chapters enthralled me, and it was a truly enjoyable and terrifying experience. The game takes place in the 1980s in an old house where dozens of families have lived over the decades, and almost all have been brutally killed. The main character, Dwayne Anderson, explores the house to gather information on its history. The player must avoid all of the deadly and horrifying spirits of the family members who died there. The chapters were genuinely terrifying from start to finish, and I am excited to know what happens next. If you want a small taste of a genuinely excellent horror experience, I highly recommend Visage.

Now for some horror-related news. On October 30, Little Hope, from the creators of Until Dawn, will be released. The game features five playable characters trapped in a ghost town haunted by spirits from witch trials in 1692. The game will release on Xbox One, PC, and Playstation 4.

There are so many great horror games to choose from for the Halloween season. The horror genre in video games has expanded so much over the last decade, with new indie horror games being released each day. Take your pick and revel in the spooky spirit of Halloween.
