Valentina, at barely one-year-old, is still very puppy-ish. She is super active, loves toys, and is a very busy girl. Her foster mom says she jumps on the sofa and flies to nearby chairs or tables.

Valentina was purchased by a nice family from a pet shop, but they had no Scottie experience. In addition, the parents were very busy between working full time, their children’s school, and after school activities. Consequently, Valentina spent a lot of time alone in her crate.

The family soon realized that they could not provide the right home for this active girl, so they called Erica at Greater NY/NJ Scottie Rescue. Valentina is now residing with a foster couple. They are older, but active, and have fallen in love with this sweet girl. Located on the ocean with a big fenced-in yard, she is very happy there. The couple have thought about adopting her, but, reluctantly, have decided she needs a home with a younger person or couple that will truly be her forever home. Valentina has been vetted, spayed, and is taking applications for that perfect home.

Valentina loves other dogs but is too boisterous for most other dogs. She is desperate to play and rushes and jumps at other dogs, as well as people. Erica says that she probably came from a puppy mill or backyard breeder and was taken from her mom and siblings too soon. Hence, she never learned the subtleties of behavior that she would have learned from her mom, like how to approach and read other dogs.

When Valentina is ready to settle down, she will sit in her human’s lap but only for short periods. Her foster dad sits in a recliner and Valentina likes to sit with him.

Valentina needs a bit more training. She will walk on a leash but pulls excitedly when she sees a person or another dog. A longer, bigger, and heavier Scottie, she is strong and needs someone who can hold on to the leash. Homes with young children or more fragile, elderly people would not be a good placement for her. A newly retired person or couple who are active would be good for her, or a family with an older child, who have time for her would also work.

Hiking or even entering into agility would be something Valentina would probably enjoy. Playdates with another active dog to help her learn how to behave with other dogs is also something that would benefit her. Taking walks with a neighbor and another dog would be good experience. Happily, Valentina is house-trained and crate-trained, though crate confinement should be limited.

This very sweet, friendly girl needs a family that is stable financially and owns their home with a nice yard to run in. An apartment or rental would not be ideal as she needs the yard for exercise. Valentina is young, healthy, and active with a long life ahead of her. She needs a home that is ready for a long-term commitment.

You can learn more about Valentina and all the other Scotties in Scottie Rescue, volunteer, apply to adopt a rescue, or make a very needed donation. During this time of the Covid virus rescue organizations need even more help with financial donations and volunteers. If you want to volunteer, you can become a foster parent or help with transporting. Scottie Rescue of Great NY/NJ is a 501C3 entity so donations are tax deductible.
