If you are looking for some great mysteries to enjoy watching, Acorn is one of the best places to go! And they not only have shows set in England, but other countries as well—such as the two shows we are reviewing this week Harry Wild (set in Ireland) and My Life is Murder (set in New Zealand). These two shows also star actresses who are well known in the United States as well–Jane Seymour and Lucy Lawless.
Harry Wild is a light mystery set in Ireland that stars the amazing Jane Seymour as Harriet (Harry) P. Wild, professor of literature, who recently joined the ranks of the retired. In season one, Harry quickly discovered that retirement wasn’t for her and found herself involved in more than one murder investigation, much to the dismay of her son, Garda (Ireland’s version of the police) Charlie Wild (Kevin Ryan), and his wife Orlan (Amy Huberman). Harry’s world collided literally with a troubled teen named Fergus Reid (Rohan Nedd), and they discovered that they made a great crime solving team. So great, in fact, that they now run their own private investigator firm.
Harry Wild Season 3 is just as much fun as the previous seasons. This season’s six episodes have Harry and Fergus solving cases in the worlds of pop music, food, a daytime Irish soap opera, a locked room mystery involving a mystery writer, the annual Vibrant Village competition, and a hostage situation. Along the way, Fergus is also dealing with his mother, who abandoned him and his sister, and is suddenly back in his life. Harry is dealing with a rival private detective who keeps showing up.
My Life is Murder is another light-hearted mystery show featuring bread-baking retired police detective Alexa Crowe who still manages to help the police solve murders on the side as a police consultant. Alexa is played by the wonderful, and seemingly ageless, Lucy Lawless. Rawiri Jobe plays her police contact Harry Henare, and even though he’s younger than her, the pair have chemistry. I keep hoping they might get together—but so far no luck. The cast also includes Ebony Vagulans as her tech-savvy roommate Madison Feliciano, and Joseph Naufahu as Reuben Wulf whose café is a haven for the group—and he sometimes gets in on the investigating as well. Added in more recent seasons is Alexa’s brother, Will Crowe (Martin Henderson), who recently was released from prison and even he gets in on the action sometimes.
This season sees the team getting involved in cases involving high society and hostile hair stylists, tennis, real estate, a ghost hunter, a private chef accused of poisoning his client, archery, the world of dance moms, a murder at a coconut oil factory, and murder at an exclusive country club.
As always, the mysteries are interesting, the setting lovely, and it’s a wonderful cast! This is definitely one of my favorite series! Can’t wait for the next season.
