by Kristalyn Patzkowski

Why have I continued
This for so long?
The question lingers in
My mind.
Why would I put myself
Through all of this?
My heels roll on the road
And instantly my foot
The pain is too much
To bear.
I just wish that the
Blisters that have surfaced
Would pop open and all of
The contents of my foot
Would spew out.
Then I would be numb.
I would not have to
Stand all of the commands.
I could finally question
All of their authority. And
I would not have to
Endure all of this.
In this moment,
Tears roll down my cheeks
And I know.
This is what it takes
To be a cog in
The Big Green Marching Machine.

I thought pirates were supposed to say things like “arrrgh!” a lot. Maybe that’s what the sore foot is supposed to help do.

Nice job Kristalyn! Your pain, someone else’s gain…I always get a rush being up close to the marching band! 🙂

Hey Rodney! I bet you didn’t know that I wrote this poem last year. Being a freshman, I was just getting situated in the band. In the last two years that I have marched with the band, my marching technique has improved, and I don’t have as much pain now. The fact is I get a high from being in the band. I can’t imagine not being a member of the Big Green Marching Machine.
