This weekend the remake of the movie Arthur came out and I had a chance to see it with my son. Arthur, played by Russell Brand, is a wealthy, carefree, drunken playboy whose favorite pastime is pulling stunts that embarrass his mother, who runs Bach Worldwide.

Fed up with his antics, Arthur’s mother gives him an ultimatum, either marry the woman she has chosen for him, someone capable of running Bach Worldwide when it’s time instead of him, or be disinherited. Not knowing how to live without the money he concedes, though he does not love the aggressive power hungry Susan (Jennifer Gardner). While his wedding is being planned around him, Arthur continues to go about living as he always has and runs into a girl named Naomi (Greta Gerwig) who unlike him is just struggling to get by. He falls in love with her, jeopardizing his fortune. The best part of this movie is the relationship between Arthur and his nanny Hobson (Helen Mirren), who has always taken care of him.

Wanting to be with Naomi, Arthur tries many things including finding a real job, attending AA to stop drinking, and trying to talk Naomi into being his mistress. It has been so long since I saw the original that I don’t really know how the two compare, but I enjoyed this version very much. The comedy was clever and Brand’s version of Arthur was endearing, even though typically I don’t like drunken humor. Mirren was as always excellent. My son loved it as well and there was even a bit of seriousness and a moral to it in the end.

If you enjoy clever, fun, comedy go see Arthur. And while there was some crude humor and sexual content it wasn’t much more than you might see on TV these days.

Rated PG-13 for alcohol use throughout, sexual content, language and some drug references.

Arthur is now playing at Dinuba Platinum Theatres 6. Showtimes can be found on their website. hey will be open all day during Spring break!

  4. In this remake of ‘Arthur,’ Russell Brand plays a spoiled man-child billionaire in pursuit of amusement. I love Katy Perry, which makes me love this man, too. I hope the movie doesn’t flop.
