Edison, a five-year-old Cairn, came into Col Potter Rescue as an owner turn-in. His owner complained that he was bossy and terrorized her; a real handful. Well, after all, he is a terrier.
P.K., his foster parent, says he will not be picked up, and he’s very vocal and demanding. He tests her by snarling and running at her. P.K., an experienced terrier person and foster parent, knows how to handle him. She stands her ground, and Edison then stops and backs off. Surprisingly, P.K. says he is polite in the kitchen and is gentle when taking treats. However, he has to be muzzled at the vet in order to lift him onto the table. After that, he is generally been quite well-behaved at vet visits. He also fights having his claws clipped so she wraps him in a towel.
Edison enjoys walking on a leash. At first, he will pull, no doubt another testing move, but with a firm hand on the leash, he then settles down and walks nicely. He also loves playing ball out in the yard or inside down a hall.
Edison is good with P.K.’s eight other dogs but doesn’t play with them or interact with them. He is not a lap dog and resists cuddles. However, usually another dog has already claimed P.K.’s lap so possibly as an only dog, he might learn to enjoy a lap. He has just recently learned to get up on the bed and the sofa to lie near P.K.
As a typical terrier, Edison is bossy and demanding. He has a high prey drive so he wouldn’t be good with cats. P.K. has gotten him to go into a crate at night, but it took two months. His previous owner stuffed him into a small, dark enclosure which probably made him resistant to crating.
After a busy day, Edison likes to settle down to watch TV. He gets excited at programs with dogs and a farm show with sheep and cows. He jumps and barks at them. P.K. thinks it is his way of protecting the home front.
Edison has no health problems. He had a growth removed, but it was benign. He has been neutered and is up to date on his vaccines.
Edison has been with P.K. for about a year and is eager for a forever home. He needs a terrier experienced person who can clearly establish himself as the alpha. He would also like someone who has time to play ball and watch TV with him. He would not be good with young children. He would be fine in an apartment with no yard as he never had a yard before coming to P.K. However, he would need regular walks.
Edison has made great strides in terms of his behavior, and, at only five, he will be a fun and long-term companion for the right person or couple.
