I’m on the case with the Entrepreneur Detective who is determined to resolve how to become your own entrepreneur and soar as head of your own division within your existing company, a new company, or opening your own enterprise.

It’s a new year, and the detective is determined to help many individuals maximize their skills to achieve their career goals, but first, he has to help them solve key questions:

Who: YOU are fulfilling your dreams.
What: Should I move up in my present company or go out on my own?
Why: My future and happiness are at stake.
When: NOW—It’s a new year and a new you.
Where: That depends on where your investigations lead you.
How: I’ll need to investigate the possibilities in my chosen field or explore new ones as I decide whether it is better to aim for a promotion in my present job or reinvent myself as an entrepreneur.

Detectives garner the best results when they dig for clues. So, mine the industries you think you’d like to work in with the experience you’ve acquired through your work life and polish the skills you’ll need.
While each case that a detective investigates is unique, sometimes there is overlap. For instance, you’ve worked in the sales industry for years. You know the product line sold by your company. Now, you want to move up to the next level. Often, there isn’t a direct line to this spot. Think of all the jobs you’ve held, the knowledge you’ve acquired, the contacts you’ve made along the way, and mine each of these elements to move into management or go out on your own. Use what you’ve learned to help colleagues who’ve supported you in your journey.

Never let bitterness over past mistakes keep you from achieving your goals for the future. Keep both feet in the present, and only look back with pride at what you’ve accomplished.

A detective never gives up. He’s always working on more than one case but gives each of them his utmost of time and energy.

I know what you’re thinking. I’m one person on a mission that only I and I alone can resolve. The detective uses a figurative magnifying glass. You have something more concrete: The Write Rules. My writing handbook includes guidelines for business writing with correct rules for parts of speech, punctuation, presentation techniques, how to be an effective listener, and getting the most from English as a Second Language via proper word usage. It wraps up with marketing and promotion tips and lends a helping hand with organizations in a myriad of industries and writing resources to build your own business knowledge reference center.

Best advice ever: Stay on the case until you resolve your career quest.
