The Social Science Department at Reedley High School is filled with outstanding teachers who motivate their students, and work hard to lead them onto the path of success. One teacher in particular, Anthony Fernandez, is well-known among students and staff for his humor and easygoing personality, and as a great friend.

Keeping a ball from touching the ground may seem like a difficult feat, but imagine doing this with a small, cone-shaped object weighing about five grams. The ladies of Reedley High School’s Badminton team master this feat using a thin, lightweight racquet, with months of diligent practice and relentless effort. This indoor sport may seem like a typical picnic activity, but the girls aren’t here just to play.

Marching down the streets of Reedley, California, is the Big Green Marching Band. It is one of the largest on the West Coast, consisting of over 300 students from Reedley High School, under the direction of Daniel Paulsen, Samuel Gipson, Lisa Dewhirst, Jason Aubrey, and Michael McGraw. This year, the Band built on the efforts of last year to fundraise for their trip to Disneyland.

The harmonic, angelic voices of the Reedley High School Choir have sang for as long as the school itself. A certificate for a superior rating from a festival was found dating back to the 1940s. The RHS Choir is currently led by director David dela Concepcion.

The foundation of all life on Earth derives from subatomic particles that form molecules and compounds, which then combine with others to form cells, organs, and organisms. This branch of science can be tricky to understand and more complicated to apply in real life, but chemistry and biology teacher Kathryn Connolly helps students comprehend the aspects of molecular and biological chemistry.

Every morning at Reedley High School, before the sun rises above the football stadium, the students of Academic Decathlon are on campus working diligently to study for their yearly competition. Academic Decathlon is a nationwide contest in which Decathletes are tested in seven areas, along with giving two speeches and having an interview.

February 23 at the Mineral King Bowl in Visalia, all was at stake for the Reedley High School Boys’ soccer team. Against the Redwood High Rangers, the intensity increased after every move. Sophomore defender Rene Prieto made his mark by scoring two goals for the team, and with a phenomenal block from the RHS boys’ goalkeeper Marco Leyva, they won 5-4 with tears of joy streaming down their faces.

Recognizing the hard work students have put in, especially through music during this spirited season, it is exciting to see the RHS Choir program working hard to bring spectacular performances to their audiences.
