The Reedley College Football team’s post-season banquet was held on November 23rd. I wasn’t much looking forward to it, to be honest. I mean, what was there really to celebrate about a team with a 3-7 record, including a season-ending four-game losing streak? Shows you what I know. The banquet was one of the most uplifting and inspiring experiences of my 54 years on this earth, all because of one person: Jesse Lownsbury.

Most residents of Kingsburg know there are a handful of events that are important to the City of Kingsburg, and more specifically to the downtown. If the Swedish Festival is number one, then the Santa Lucia Day celebration might be next.
One of the most successful events held by the Reedley Downtown Association, the Electric Farm Equipment Parade, was the brain child of local auctioneer Ed Croissant. Sometime in the fall of 2000, Ed was talking with daughter Daniele, owner of the former Coffee and Candy Shop, about ways to promote Reedley’s downtown for the upcoming holidays.
Just like at other high schools, fall is the busiest time of the year at Reedley High School, with football games, rallies, and band performances. And at all of these gathering, there is one thing you are sure to find -- school spirit! In fact, our Pirate pride is what gives so many students the motivation to be involved with school activities.
These poems were written by local teens who won our November poetry contest. There is quite a variety and this time we even have a winner from Parlier! The contest is open to anyone age 14-19 in the Kings River area.
This Valley is filled with incredible talent that often is overlooked. It can be easy to forget that there is great theatre, music, literature, and film right here where we live. At KRL, we desire to raise that awareness and one way is by doing profiles on local actors, directors, writers, and others.
After a restless night I got up and headed for Main Street to meet Stephen, with an hour to spare before the police arrived at the Happy Mouth. After chaining my bike at the bike rack outside, I found my old friend at our usual booth reading this week’s Kingsburg News. I slid into the seat across from him and couldn’t help feeling we’d gone full circle
Although it may seem hard to believe, a hunger crisis has been unfolding right here in Fresno County—the breadbasket of California, or as we who live in Reedley like to say, “The World’s Fruit Basket.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Quick Facts about Fresno County, 22.1% of the population was under the poverty level in 2008 compared to 13.3% in all of California.
The Reedley College Football season was a story of streaks, and so it was appropriate that they ended the season with a 48-13 loss to Fresno City College Saturday afternoon at Ratcliff Stadium in Fresno. The Tigers opened the season with three straight losses.
