The Source LGBT+ Center's 2nd Annual Halloween Gala, presented by Tucoemas Federal Credit Union, will be taking place on October 23. It is their fresh and inclusive update of the traditional nonprofit fundraising gala. The purpose of the gala is to raise funds to sustain operations of The Source LGBT+ Center in Visalia, which is one of the nation’s fastest growing LGBTQ+ centers. Recently we chatted with their director of Development and Strategy, Nick Vargas, to learn more.

Hard to believe fall is almost upon us. Here in Michigan, the sun is going down earlier, the temperature is manageable again, and kids are back in school. I work for an academic library, and this time of year is so exciting for me. I love to see all of the fresh and eager faces making their way around campus and in the library. I am glad to know that the school has taken a hard line regarding vaccinations and testing and hoping that the worst of the Delta variant is soon to be behind us so that we can finally look forward to visiting with family and friends for all of the fall and winter holidays.

Recently I have taken to republishing the works of Fergus Hume, a gay nineteenth-century writer of mysteries, goth romances, and fantasy novels. Some are easy for me to republish and some take me a lot of work, but those that are the hardest for me are sometimes the most fun as they require a lot more research and double checking the first editions to the scanned copies.

I can’t believe that summer is already half over. It only seems like it just began. At the academic library where I work, we are getting ready for fall classes to begin. This year is especially busy as all of the furniture that has been in storage over the span of the pandemic have to be put back out as social distancing guidelines have expired. It is a thrilling time as we are seeing the library come back to be seen as a place for the students to collaborate and congregate. It’s starting to feel like home again.

The Always Anonymous Beast was originally released in 1987 and has recently been re-released by ReQueered Tales. It is the first book in the Caitlin Reece Mystery series written by Lauren Wright Douglas.
Caitlin is a private detective, but it’s not completely clear in this book if she is officially one or someone who simply is paid to help right wrongs. While Caitlin is definitely tough and capable she isn’t a stereotypical hard-boiled kind of detective—she is an ex-lawyer who once worked for the Crown Prosecutor’s office (think the D.A.’s office in this country), a Shakespeare scholar, and a classical music aficionado.

Neon Yang’s The Black Tides of Heaven: Slackcraft and Gender Choice

I’m not quite sure what I expected when reading Neon Yang’s The Black Tides of Heaven (2017). Terms like silkpunk and Asian fantasy/mythology were running through my head, but other than a passing acquaintance with Zen koans, the Tao te Ching, and the Mahabarata, I was in unfamiliar waters. I soon learned that “Silkpunk” is the term writer Ken Liu has coined for the genre of a “very specific technology and literary aesthetic” blending magic and technology in an Asian setting.
