China, a special needs wheaten Cairn, presented a tough case for Col. Potter Cairn Rescue.
At nine years old, China had suffered years of neglect and abuse. Her tail was broken in several places and her sphincter muscle was damaged, both of which made elimination difficult. She was also missing the top half of her right ear and had chronic bronchitis.
When Calamity Jane (CJ) was picked up by an area shelter, her coat was very overgrown, but the shelter staff was sure she was at least part Cairn. They contacted Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network and sent pictures of the little shaggy girl. Looking at the photos, CP volunteers also thought she was a Cairn mix and made arrangements to take her.
Germany – or Manny – as his foster mom, PK calls him, spent his early years in a puppy mill as a stud dog with little attention, certainly no loving attention, and most of his time spent in a small cage.
When Jim Bowie, a little Wheaten Cairn, came into the Col. Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue at the age of nine, he was a happy boy who had clearly not been abused. However, he had some medical issues like Dry Eye and severe skin irritations, which clearly had been neglected.
When Fritter came to Dianne to be fostered in May, 2014, he was about seven years old and had been an owner turn-in. It was the usual story: children with allergies and he marked in the house under stress. However, Dianne says he is just the sweetest boy and his marking can be managed with belly bands and regular walks.
Jace, an owner turn-in, came into Col. Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue in rough shape. He was matted, covered with fleas, and as Chris, his foster mom, said,” He came in with his dukes up.” Clearly, he had not been treated well.
Honora, or Foxy, as she is known to her friends, came into Col Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue because her elderly owner could no longer care for her. This sweet little five year old wheaten Cairn was very fortunate because her vet took charge of her, made sure she was up to date on her medical needs, and then called Col Potter.

Toronto, or Tori as she is known to her friends, is a little Wheaten Cairn who came from a puppy mill. She was rescued by a Canadian branch of Col Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue and then sent on to Col Potter in the USA. When Cairns are rescued in a group, usually from a mill, thematic names are often used to honor the rescuers. In this case all the dogs in Tori’s group were named for Canadian cities.
Broderick had been on the mean streets for a while when he was picked up and sent to a local shelter. That’s where Col Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue found him just hours before he was to be put down.
