2nd Space

by Terrance McArthur

The Good Company Players’ holiday shows at the 2nd Space Theatre have always been a good bet; there’s no dinner with the show like you’d get at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater, but the price is lower for a classic, love-and-laugh-filled memory or a musical review to lift the spirits. It could be The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, It’s a Wonderful Life: a Radio Play, or A Christmas Carol, or a lively conglomeration of comedy and music like this year’s Holly Jolly Holiday, playing through December 19.

Do you know what “serendipity” is? The word was coined from a Persian folktale, The Three Princes of Serendip, whose heroes succeed by luck and accident. It’s those little instants when things in the universe fall into place. Synchronicity. Chance. Happenstance.

Another year of theatre in the Valley has come and gone, and it was another amazing one. There is so much talent in the Valley that no one needs to go to New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco to see a great show. Let’s take a look back at some of the highlights!

Daphne du Maurier wrote moody, atmospheric fiction, sometimes paranormal, with love entwined—”romance noir,” where characters with a happy ending aren’t really that happy. Rebecca, Jamaica Inn, The Birds, Frenchman’s Creek…and My Cousin Rachel. The Good Company Players’ 2nd Space Theatre currently presents a tense, breathtaking adaptation through October 13.

In mathematics, a proof is a way of verifying a hypothesis by building on known facts and theorems. When I tried to explain to two separate people that David Auburn’s Pulitzer-winning play Proof is about mathematics and mental illness, each asked, “Aren’t they the same thing?” The Good Company Players’ 2nd Space Theatre hosts this study in family and prime numbers through August 12.

Take an 1880 short novel by Henry James, filter it through a 1947 script by Ruth and Augustus Goetz (who also wrote the 1949 screenplay that starred Olivia de Haviland and Montgomery Clift), and fill the stage with a Victorian richness and intense performances, and you have the latest 2nd Space offering by the Good Company Players, The Heiress, which runs through June 17.

Political crony rewards and class division: the stuff of which today’s headlines are made. Who would expect to find these themes in an operetta that’s almost 150 years old?
Gilbert & Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore—or—The Lass That Loved a Sailor has sailed into port at the Good Company Players’ 2nd Space Theatre, 928 E. Olive Avenue, docking there through April 23. Director J. Daniel Herring has recruited a crew of powerful leads to set forth on the familiar waters.
