Murrieta’s Midnight Ride: The Legend of California’s Headless Horseman Part 2

by Sarah Peterson-Camacho
What began as a joke by a San Francisco pundit in 1906—the earliest Joaquin Murrieta ghost reference I could find in the California press—would become a headless paranormal powerhouse by mid-century.
First appearing as a put-upon spirit placating the weepy wraith of Scottish pirate Captain Kidd in A.J. Waterhouse’s “Occidental Accidentals” humor column in The San Francisco Call and Post, the ghost of Joaquin Murrieta retained his head—but not his sense of humor—in Why Kidd’s Ghost Wept.

The Mystery of the Mirror: A Halloween Mystery Short Story By Shari Held

by Sheri Held

I watch them, the young Americans with trendy $200 haircuts and designer clothes straight from the front pages of Vogue. I listen to their carefree laughter and idle chatter regularly punctuated with a giggle or an OMG! They haven’t a care in the world. Their charmed lives lie ahead of them. Dinner and dancing with handsome men who drive fancy sports cars. Trips to Europe and exotic islands. They take it all for granted. Like their lives are unfolding in a script of their own making.

Chaos at the Lazy Bones Bookshop A Halloween Bookshop Mystery By Emmeline Duncan: Review/Giveaway

by Lorie Lewis Ham

I am a big fan of Emmeline Duncan’s Ground Rules Mysteries, so I was excited to see that she was starting a new series as well, and this one takes place in a Halloween-themed town called Elyan Hollow, Oregon. I love Halloween, so what could be better than that? This series features Bailey Briggs who has taken over her grandfather’s bookshop Lazy Bones Books. So Halloween and a bookstore—perfect!

Queer Mystery Coming Attractions: November 2024

by Matt Lubbers-Moore

As we say goodbye to Halloween, and skip Thanksgiving decorations and go right for Christmas, it seems insane how fast the year has passed. I feel as if I only just finished the Summer Reading Program at my local library and now I’m figuring out programming for the Winter Reading Program! I also bought a house, moved, and renovated a room for my gay mystery library. I also started teaching at a local community college, and I am still working part-time as a reference librarian.

Happy Almost Halloween!

by Misty Simon

Happy Almost Halloween! It’s my favorite month and time of the year! For the last almost (gulp) 25 years I’ve been writing mysteries of some sort, from light fluffy ones set in small towns across the USA to Ren Faires run by misfit paranormals and a junkyard full of very badly behaved ghosts. I’ve even thrown in ghosts that are more like the famed Casper but look like the Golden Girls (they call themselves the Silver Bettys since that first title was taken).

The Elements of Good Ghost Stories

by Beth Castrodale

I’ve loved ghost stories since I was a kid. Back then, I’d sometimes write my own spooky tales, and they often featured unsuspecting children who’d wandered into haunted houses or castles. Looking back, I think I was trying to make a personal connection with the books, movies, and TV shows that frightened me the most. But I’m sure I didn’t think about what made ghost stories tick.
