Mika Loves People

Poor little Mika, a one and a half year old Wheatie, fell into a bad situation. A well-meaning woman adopted her from Craig’s list as a gift for her brother, who had recently lost his Scottie.

When Mika arrived, she had significant skin problems from a terrible flea infestation. Because of the fleas, she was missing hair. The brother said he couldn’t take Mika, as he just wasn’t ready for another dog. Then the woman died, so the brother contacted Erica of NY/NJ Scottie Rescue.

Mika

Mika had been treated for fleas before being turned over to the rescue. However, given her skin problems and no records on any vaccines or vet visits, Erica took her immediately to the vet. She was put on a two-week course of antibiotics.

Mika has not been spayed, and the rescue will have to wait for that until the infection from her skin problems is cleared up. She has no other health problems, so once she is spayed and vaccinated, she will be ready to find her forever home.

Despite her problems, Mika is a loving dog that only wants to sit on her human’s lap and cuddle. She gives kisses and is easy to pick up. Although she is a bit shy at first, she does love people. She is not good with other dogs, and she’s not especially interested in toys, probably because she was never played with. It is not known how she would be with a house cat, but given her laid back demeanor, she might adjust to a cat sibling.

Mika is an easy dog. She is not destructive, doesn’t require a lot of activity, is housebroken, and walks well on a leash. At only fifteen pounds, she is very princess-like.

Mika would like a home with a human to cuddle with and no other dogs. A young retired couple or individual person would work nicely. She would probably not do well with young children or an active family, but an older child who knows how to treat a dog and would respect Mika’s desire for calm might be fine.

Mika does not need a big yard and could do well in an apartment. This sweet, petite little girl just wants a human to love her and spend quiet time with her.

You can learn more about Mika and all the other Scotties at the Scottie Rescue sites, where you can also volunteer, apply to adopt a rescue, or make a financial donation. With the holidays approaching, it’s a good time to give a much needed financial gift to rescue organizations. If you want to volunteer, you can become a foster parent or help with transporting. Scottie Rescue of Greater NY/NJ is a 501C3 entity, so donations are tax deductible.

  1. Aaaaw! Lee, Mika is adorable! I hope she has found a new home now. She shouldn’t have to wait long, as cute as she is. Keep me posted!

  2. Rescue work is expensive and time consuming. A reputable rescue will have animals checked by a vet and treated for any problems (if necessary). They will also spend time with that animal and be able to give you an honest evaluation of personality and help you decide it it is a good fit for you. NEVER give a pet as a gift unless you know that the recipient wants and can care for one – and, if posssible, let that person be part of the decision making process. I spent many years driving with the Meezer Express (Siamese Rescue) and would sometimes fill in and drive transportation legs for other groups and got to know people involved in rescue. One friend sent me a cat from her rescue (yes, she asked me first) because it needed a home where it would thrive (the cat was not happy in the rescue).
Mika is precious and I hope that she soons find her happily ever after.
