2021 has been a strange year for video games as the pandemic is finally starting to catch up with game studios. Many highly anticipated games have been delayed to next year, and there have been many lulls in new games to play. I have found myself replaying many of my favorite games as I have nothing new to play. Hope is not lost, however, because Playstation surprised all of us by hosting a State of Play showcase earlier this month.
The first game announced was a remake of the critically acclaimed Star Wars game, Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic. There is no current release date set for this game, but fans are excited about it nonetheless. 
The next game announced was Project Eve, developed by a studio in South Korea. It immediately captured everyone’s attention with its gorgeous graphics and universe and unique gameplay and setting. It will release on PC and consoles, but no release date has currently been announced. 
Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, a new Borderlands spin-off, was given an update with a new trailer and release date of March 25, 2022.
Forspoken, although shown in the previous State of Plays, was showcased much more heavily this time around and has become one of my most anticipated games for next year. The playable character Frey is transported to a fantasy world and must use her newly acquired powers to survive. The gameplay and graphics shown at the showcase were astounding and got many people excited to play it. The game is set to release in Spring 2022. 
Alan Wake, a famous horror game from 2010, is set for a remaster that will be released on October 5 for PC, Playstation, and Xbox. The horror game will release just in time for the Halloween season.
Ghostwire Tokyo, which has been talked about for quite some time and unfortunately was delayed to next year, received a new trailer at the State of Play. The game takes place in a twisted version of Tokyo haunted by a supernatural presence.
So many remasters/remakes are being released/announced and Uncharted is now one of them. The remaster will include the A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy games from the Uncharted series. The collection will be released in early 2022.
Insomniac Games have truly hit their stride this year as two games of theirs were announced at the State of Play. To the fan’s extreme surprise, a Wolverine game was announced. The game does not yet have a release date as they are early in production. Spiderman 2, a sequel to one of Insomniac Games best games Spiderman, was announced and set to release in 2023. The trailer teased Venom as one of the game’s villains.
The showcase ended with the showing of a trailer for God of War: Ragnarok, a sequel to God of War (2018). The game has been in development for quite some time, and fans have been on the edge of their seats waiting to see anything to do with the next game, including myself. The trailer featured Atreus as a bit older, some of our friends and favorite characters from the previous game returning, some exciting new gameplay elements, and a brief image of Thor. There is currently no set release date beyond the vague promise of a 2022 release.
While the game industry has been trying to catch up, Playstation took the opportunity to surprise and amaze with one of the best State of Plays in a long time.
