This is the first in a series featuring mystery podcasts! This week we chatted with the members of It Was a Dark & Stormy Book Club Podcast.
KRL: How did you come up with the name?
Dark & Stormy: We always knew it would be a book club but we wanted a name that would be recognizable as mystery.
KRL: What are your names?
Dark & Stormy: Ann “Dark”, Tracey “Stormy and Kathy “Night”
KRL: What is your connection to each other?
Dark & Stormy: It is a family affair. Ann is Tracey’s mother. Tracey is married to Kathy’s brother.
KRL: What are you backgrounds in mystery? (readers, writers, reviewers, librarians, etc)
Dark & Stormy: We are all passionate about reading all genres but are mostly fond of mysteries. We have been members of a local mystery book club for about 10 years now and really enjoy the format.
KRL: Why did you decide to make a podcast?
Dark & Stormy: We have enjoyed podcasts for many years and felt that it was lacking in mystery book coverage. We also were looking for new authors to discover.
KRL: Why a mystery podcast?
Dark & Stormy: It gave us an excuse to do what we love. Every time we were together we discussed what we were reading. Why not record it.
KRL: How do you decide what content you would have in your podcast?
Dark & Stormy: This is always a work in progress. Our format is continuously changing. We originally did not feature author interviews but are glad we now do. We have also expanded our format to include true-crime and suspense.
KRL: Are there certain types of mysteries you each prefer?
Dark & Stormy: We all enjoy historical mysteries Tracey enjoys mostly true-crime and thrillers. Ann enjoys cozies and police procedurals and Kathy enjoys Nordic Noir.
KRL: How do you decide who you will interview and what books you will review?
Dark & Stormy: Our passion is discovering new and up and coming authors. We reach out to some but mostly we are contacted by their publisher.
KRL: How long have you had a podcast?
Dark & Stormy: We just published our 100th episode. April 12th will be our second anniversary.
KRL: What do you like best about doing a podcast?
Dark & Stormy: The opportunity to discover new authors and getting to meet them in person at functions like Malice Domestic.
KRL: What has been the hardest?
Dark & Stormy: Editing, Editing and more Editing.
KRL: How did you decide what platform you would use as a host for your podcast?
Dark & Stormy: We did some research and found that Spreaker fit our needs.
KRL: Future goals?
Dark & Stormy: To be able to travel to more events in the future.
KRL: What makes your podcast different?
Dark & Stormy: We feature authors who are not household names but we do not limit ourselves. Also we feel we dive very deep with our questions. The authors appreciate our in-depth questions.
KRL: Any extra special episodes coming up?
Dark & Stormy: We will be highlighting the books nominated for the Agatha Award at Malice Domestic. We also interview more seasoned authors and those episodes are called “In Agatha’s Footsteps.”

KRL: Do you have a newsletter? If so, what goes in the newsletter and how often does it go out?
Dark & Stormy: Our newsletter comes out the first week of the month. It can be subscribed to on our website. We publish short stories in our newsletter; anyone can submit a story.
