A Cold Death is the 16th book in Marilyn Meredith’s Deputy Tempe Crabtree series. Tempe is a deputy in the community of Bear Creek, in the hills of California. I have enjoyed following Tempe on her adventures through the years. Each book provides the reader with a good old-fashioned mystery, great characters, and a look into Tempe’s Yanduchi Indian background and beliefs.

book In A Cold Death, Tempe gets a strange request from friends who run a summer camp for girls. Even though it is winter, they have some unwelcome guests at the camp and they would like her help in getting them to leave before they are stranded there by the coming snowstorm. She and her husband Hutch, a local pastor, head up to the camp but don’t manage to beat the storm and are stuck there along with the caretakers and their guests. The unwelcome guests are the owners of the camp, along with some friends they invited with the hope that they would donate to keep the camp going. However, instead of everyone having a fun time, tempers begin to flare and one of them ends up dead.

Since they are stuck there until the storm lets up and help can arrive, Tempe and Hutch try to figure out what happened and many secrets are revealed as they investigate. To further complicate things, the ghost of a former camper is trying to communicate with Tempe.

A Cold Death is a fun, quick read. I love Tempe and her husband and how accepting he is of the spiritual side of her heritage even when he doesn’t understand it-their relationship is one of my favorite things about this series. Put that together with a great mystery and you can’t lose! I recommend this book, and if you haven’t read any of the previous books, go check out the whole series!
