Kalayna Price’s Grave Witch series is one of my absolute favorite urban fantasy series. Grave Ransom is the fifth and latest book in that series, and I couldn’t wait to read it!
Alex Craft is what is called a grave witch-she can talk to the dead and has used those abilities to help the police solve many crimes. She also has a detective agency of sorts with her friend who is also a grave witch. In Grave Ransom, Alex is having lunch with a friend and suddenly senses a dead body–but this is not a typical dead body but one that is still walking. Alex follows the body and finds herself caught up in the middle of a bank heist. This brings agent Briar Darque of the Magical Crimes Investigation Bureau back into her life–someone she does not want to find out that she is also Fae (something Alex finds out earlier in the series and is still struggling with).
Next Alex takes on what appears to be an easy missing persons case, but where does she find this person? Also robbing a bank and also among the walking dead. Alex now finds herself with no choice but to help Briar try to figure out what is going on with all of these walking dead. The investigation leads her to some extremely dark and powerful magic.
Another fun fantasy element in this book is that Alex and her friends are now living in an actual fairy castle, with magical food and even a garden gnome. This is something else that she can’t afford to let other people know, but she almost gets caught a time or two.
As if her life wasn’t complicated enough, Alex is dating a soul collector whom she refers to as Death–someone she has known for many years. This case brings up some difficult issues for them that could tear them apart. It was nice to see Alex’s relationship with Falin (Fae Investigation Bureau agent and much more) moving towards more of a friendship, though one has to wonder exactly who Alex will end up with.
This series has my absolute favorite combination of mystery and fantasy! There is nothing that I love to read more. Kalayna writes wonderful characters, provides the reader with a good mystery, and the best of urban fantasy. If you haven’t read this series go grab all five books and binge–they are so worth it!
