Nell Ingram feels the earth, is healed by the earth, and gets things to grow. She can even feed a person’s life force into the earth until they die. She was an outcast of the polygamous cult where she was born, but now she has friends, her teammates in the paranormal arm of Homeland Security. In Faith Hunter’s second Soulwood book, Curse on the Land, Nell is back from training.
Something is wrong with her land, but she is called away to work on a case of animals and people going in circles, major fungal infections, and hints of witchcraft.
The major background work was laid in the first book, Blood of the Earth, and Curse on the Land jumps into a round of sleeping giants, Nazi spells, power sources, moon cycles, and revenge. Team-leader Rick, transferred from the Jane Yellowrock series, is having a rough time, romantically and as a were-panther. Repressed for so long by her upbringing, Nell feels guilt as she steps away from the rules that once governed her, and finds it difficult to deal with her feelings about co-workers.
Where the Yellowrock books are combat-oriented with a high quotient of firepower, Nell’s methods are more deductive, less Avengers action, and more Sherlock Holmes eliminating of what doesn’t fit the evidence. Nell is armed, but the battleground is often her own mind, where paranormal forces try to overwhelm her. Still, physical confrontations are a part of the mixture. Some of the other characters carry most of Hunter’s snarky dialogue, but Nell does have a few verbal moments where she gives as good as she gets, and more.
Back on the home front, Nell deals with the consequences of her actions in the first book, changes in the cult world, helping family members handle emerging powers, and controlling a plant that had too much of Nell’s blood. Nell is still a fish out of water in the outside world, adjusting to modern society and trying to catch up on pop culture references, but she’s a quick learner. Jump into Nell’s adventures, and you’ll quickly learn to like her.

Sounds like an interesting series that I need to explore.
The Yellowrock books have been on my TBR pile for awhile but haven’t had luck finding them. Thank you for the chance.
