This last month has been a time of swords and heroes for us here at KRL–first we had Camelot at Roger Rocka’s, and this weekend we saw Robin Hood at the Enchanted Playhouse in Visalia.

The Enchanted Playhouse is a children’s theatre and it is the place where I first introduced my children to theatre many years ago. Now I am able to take my eight-year-old niece with me and she loves it! We will see if she, like my children, ends up on stage herself someday.

I imagine that most people are familiar with the story of Robin Hood–he was a bandit with a bow and arrow who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. However, the story is much more complicated than that, which is seen in this play. Robin Hood (Aaron Perez) is trying to help the poor, while the evil Prince John torments the poor for his own gain with King Richard (Bruce Rakich) missing. We never see Prince John in this play but he is mentioned often, and the mere mention brings great loathing from the poor. Carrying out John’s desires is the evil Lady Merle (Allison Enos). We also have the love story of Robin Hood and his Maid Marian (Isabella O’ Keefe), and all of the other usual characters–Sheriff of Nottingham (Josiah Miller), Little John (Chris Lopez), Friar Tuck (Thomas Crowe), and many others.

This story is filled with action and adventure, heroes and villains. My niece loved it, especially with all of the sword fights and excitement. She had a wonderful time, capped off with being able to meet the actors and get their autographs after the show. If you are looking for something fun you can take the kids to–this is a perfect way to introduce them to theatre! They will have a blast, and they can even purchase their own sword during intermission (Don’t worry it’s not real).

Robin Hood continues at the Enchanted Playhouse, 307 E Main St, Visalia, CA, through October October 15. Tickets can be purchased on their website or at the door.
