Angel Crawford is a zombie. She doesn’t shuffle, but she does eat brains when she needs more energy. She has a parasite/symbiont/mutagen inside her that makes her faster, heals her quickly, gives her strength, and keeps her away from her old alcoholic-druggie lifestyle (she’s even passed the GED…barely).

How the White Trash Zombie Got Her Groove Back is the fourth outing in Diana Rowland’s series that began with My Life as a White Trash Zombie, continuing through Even White Trash Zombies Get the Blues and White Trash Zombie Apocalypse. When leaders of The Tribe–the zombie underground that Angel calls the Zombie Mafia–disappear, accusations of betrayal fly at the speed of blame and nobody trusts anybody.

Angel’s love life has hit a brick wall, and she has to decide what the future holds for a super-charged brain-eater, while she tries to help the friend-zombie she created deal with some side-effects of experiments from a nasty mega-corporation that sees zombies as a way to create super-soldiers, and protects a Congresswoman who doesn’t know that her lover is a centuries-old zombie.

There is brain-slurping, kidnapping, extortion, stun-guns, thong underwear, zombie-torturing, society fundraisers, siblings in disguise, and escapes through the sewers. The action goes from backwoods Louisiana to swanky hotels in New York City. Over it all is the voice of Angel, who’s no angel. She’s a foul-mouthed, rude, out-of-her-depth, surprisingly resourceful former felon who frustrates her sensei with her inability to master the basic moves of jiujitsu. She is also wicked funny. Angel will make you laugh out loud, and she will also make you come close to losing your lunch. After all, these are creatures that suck down pureed brains for a pick-me-up.

To give an idea of the kind of language this book contains, I picked a page at random and counted six profanities and vulgarisms that would not be allowed on network television. It was like substitute-teaching in junior high, again.

Angel is a distinct character, and she has grown through the series, but the book ends with a development that does not bode well for her continued progress and refinement.
