The Reedley College Tigers lost their Valley Conference opener Saturday afternoon in Rocklin, falling to the Sierra College Wolverines 42-13. With the loss, the Tigers were all but eliminated from post season bowl eligibility.
You had the feeling it was going to be a long day when the Tigers ran out for their first offensive play of the day, and Quarterback Mike Ferrara-Weed wasn’t ready. The Tigers had a first and goal after Tre Powell ran the opening kickoff to the Sierra five-yard line. When the offense came on the field, there were only ten players. The Tigers had to use a time out, probably the earliest time out in the history of football. After they got organized, they failed to even put points on the board, having a chip shot field goal attempt blocked on fourth down. Some start!
It went downhill from there, with another poor defensive performance, spotty offense and a general lack of execution.
As we have said several times this year, this is a young team, a talented team, but a team that is still learning how to win. This season’s goal to play in a post season bowl is probably over, but the Tigers can still make a positive statement with good efforts in their final four games.
The three game road trip is over, and the Tigers will back at home this Saturday afternoon at one p.m. to host San Joaquin Delta. The Mustangs are a formidable team this year. They smoked COS Saturday 62-35. A good effort against the Mustangs would be a very good way to put memories of the Sierra game in the trash can where they belong.
