During the recent Hollywood writers and actors strikes new American television was harder to find, so I was more grateful than ever for streaming services like AcornTV and their wonderful selection of TV from the UK, Australia, and a handful of other countries—especially mystery TV. One such show is Harry Wild.
In October of this year, season 2 of Harry Wild premiered. It is a light mystery set in Ireland that stars the amazing Jane Seymour as Harriet (Harry) P. Wild, professor of literature, who recently joined the ranks of the retired. In season one, Harry quickly discovered that retirement wasn’t for her and found herself involved in more than one murder investigation, much to the dismay of her son Garda (Ireland’s version of the police) Charlie Wild (Kevin Ryan) and his wife Orlan (Amy Huberman). Her world collided literally with a troubled teen named Fergus Reid (Rohan Nedd), and they discovered that they made a great mystery solving team. So great, in fact, that they now run their own private investigator firm.
While Fergus has a bit of a troubled past, with Harry’s help, he has gotten his life going down the right path. His reasons for the trouble were that he was trying to provide for his younger sister because his father was a drunk and low-level criminal, and his mother had abandoned them. Now his father even seems to be doing a bit better, and suddenly in this season, his mother has shown up out of the blue. Fergus can’t decide whether her motives are pure or if she is up to something more selfish. Fergus is also dating Harry’s niece. Harry and Fergus play off each other really well.
In season 2, the pair deal with the murder of a friend, a bad cop, devil worshipers, magic, and a locked room/murder mystery party turned deadly. In one episode, something from Orlan’s past comes back to cause her problems, and she reaches out to Harry for help. Their previously strained relationship takes a really nice turn because of it. It took me a bit to recognize Amy from another brilliant Irish mystery show I really enjoyed called Striking Out.
There are six episodes in season 2 and they were a lot of fun. Jane Seymore is always a delight, and I hope to see more of Rohan Nedd in other projects as well. And as I get older myself, I really enjoy seeing shows with older protagonists who are just as vital and capable as ever! If you enjoy a light mystery, don’t miss Harry Wild. If you haven’t seen season 1, be sure to check that out first.
