A request from friend and new Hulett Officer Corbin Dougherty to investigate a suspicious motorcycle accident has Sheriff Walt Longmire and his best friend Henry Standing Bear out of Absaroka County and in Devils Tower, Wyoming. The neighboring Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and its million attendees already overwhelm Hulett’s minuscule police force, and the news that the crash victim was a member of the Tre Tre Nomads motorcycle gang could harken to an impending war between clubs. An ironic Tonto to Walt’s lackadaisical Lone Ranger, the vacationing Henry is instead more focused on reclaiming his 1974 trophy in the completely insane Sturgis Jackpine Gypsies Hill Climb.

bookEverything changes with the introduction of Lola Wojciechowski, the original Lola whose namesake has been passed on to those Walt and Henry love the most. Walt’s granddaughter was in truth named after Henry’s cherished ’59 Thunderbird, but the classic car first took the title from the femme fatale Henry hasn’t seen in thirty years. It is her son who remains in a coma following the motorcycle crash, and Lola is demanding their help in finding the people responsible.

While 99% of the Sturgis motorcyclists may be law-abiding weekend warriors and riding enthusiasts, that 1% will be more than enough to keep Walt and the Cheyenne Nation busy. Between fending off inept thieves, facing off against furious club members, and dodging the manipulative Lola, Walt has the chance to find the completely impractical Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, sold to the Hulett Police Department by the US Government, very useful.

This continues to be one of the most witty, suspenseful, and emotionally moving mystery series being written today. Readers will be laughing out-loud in the first chapter, and applauding for some righteous and rather forceful law enforcement just a few chapters later. Walt’s 150-pound faithful canine companion more than lives up to being the Dog of War, yet is somehow as adorable as he is menacing. Never to be ignored is Walt’s girlfriend and undersheriff Victoria Moretti, who descends upon Sturgis as only Vic could.

The title of this book is so clever that it reveals nothing, yet is completely central to the story. Craig Johnson stands out by masterfully creating characters for whom readers continually cheer, and he delivers moments that are often both funny and empathic. Walt and Henry Standing Bear are confident and physically intimidating, but the tragedies in their past can still render them uncharacteristically vulnerable. A gallant knight in a cowboy hat who stands up for the weak and any damsel in distress, Walt is the dry humored, dedicated, and noble hero for the modern age.

  1. I’m going to have to tell my sister about this book. She and her husband are both Harley-Davidson riders and do the weekend riding! I’ve had the privilege of seeing Devil’s Tower, so the setting is bringing back wonderful memories to me! Of course, we didn’t have to deal with a murder! lol DElholm@prodigy.net
