Acorn TV is an excellent choice if you love mysteries not made in America. Most of them are set in the UK, but there are some set in other countries such as Australia and New Zealand. The Crow Girl is a recent release on AcornTV with the final of the six episodes airing on October 13, and is based on the Crow Girl book series written by Erik Axl Sund.

Much of what you find on Acorn falls either under the lighter side of mysteries like The Madame Blanc Mysteries and Harry Wild, or more traditional mysteries like The Chelsea Detective and The Brokenwood Mysteries (all personal favorites)—at least those are the ones I usually watch. The Crow Girl falls more on the dark and twisted side of mystery—definitely more in the thriller category, though technically it is a police procedural as well. DCI Jeanette Kilburn (Eve Myles, Keeping Faith) and eminent psychotherapist Dr. Sophia Craven (Katherine Kelly, Happy Valley) join forces to hunt a killer targeting young men. DCI Kilburn is convinced the killer is a local pedophile, or at the very least that he knows what’s going on. But when she uncovers the body of a missing child, the pair are pulled into a dangerous world of historic abuse and murder. Kilburn also struggles with balancing police work and family life, and begins to wonder if she can even trust those closest to her in the department.

The dark side of The Crow Girl was honestly almost too dark for me, however the story was so compelling and filled with so many twists and turns I had to stick around to find out what was going on. I truly never saw the twist at the end coming, and it did leave us with a bit of a cliffhanger! If you enjoy a mystery on the darker and twisted side that is very complicated, The Crow Girl is for you. It is well done and well-acted. There is a season 2 in the works. Do be warned there is child and domestic abuse in this story.
