The console wars have truly returned this month. Xbox and Playstation are battling it out for the best console. Many people cannot afford both consoles, so they must decide between the two. Both companies are always competing with one another, especially now that a new Xbox and new Playstation are about to be released.
On September 9, Microsoft announced that the Xbox Series S will be $299 and the Xbox Series X will be $499. The Series S will be digital only with no disk drive. The consoles are set to release on November 10, 2020.
On September 16, Playstation held a Playstation 5 Showcase. Games coming to the PS5 were announced along with a price and release date for the PS5. Final Fantasy 16 is coming to the PS5. There is no release date announced for the game yet. Hogwarts Legacy, a Harry Potter role-playing game set at Hogwarts in the 1800s, is also coming to the PS5 and will release sometime in 2021. This game has caused a lot of controversy because of Harry Potter J.K. Rowling’s transphobic tweets and the recent release of a new book rooted in transphobia. Despite the fact it has been announced that she was not directly involved in the game, she still receives royalties and playing the game is promoting her and her franchise.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales was announced a while back, but the showcase finally showed more gameplay details. The game is set to release this year. A special edition of Devil May Cry 5 was also announced and is coming to the PS5 at launch. The final game to be announced at the showcase was God of War 2, though they did not provide many details. Finally, the prices and release date for the PS5 were announced. The standard PS5 will cost $499 with the digital edition costing $399, with both versions releasing on November 12. Pre-orders began on September 17. The pre-order situation was a disaster as all of the PS5s sold out in minutes, Playstation ill prepared for the amount of people who would want to pre-order. Playstation announced on September 19 that they would have more PS5s available to pre-order soon.
With the console wars underway once again, I am excited to see who wins.
