Cat Latimer was an English professor when she inherited her former home from her ex-husband, Michael. She decided it was time to live her dream—write books and host writers’ retreats. With the help of her BFF, Shauna, to run things day to day and feed the writers, things are coming together. A handyman is hired to remodel the rooms and the first guests are due to arrive. A surprise is Tom Cook—he’s hardly a beginning writer so why is he coming?

Tom is an alumni of Covington College which is just blocks away from Cat’s house and he’s ready to write another book, a departure from his usual genre. The writers have been invited to use the college library while they’re in town. It’s a little weird, going back to the college where her ex-husband had taught and dallied with students. It’s even weirder to run into Seth, a former boyfriend, who surprisingly is the handyman hired to renovate the house. book

The students include two sisters who write romance novels (one of them has a crush on Tom Cook), a student from the college, and Billy Williams who doesn’t seem to fit with the group. Come to think of it, the student doesn’t seem to fit either. Still, things are going pretty well. Cat is able to write every morning, mingle with the guests, and still have time to avoid Seth, just in case the attraction is still there.

Unfortunately, Tom Cook is murdered in his room. Cat’s uncle is the Chief of Police, and he’s able to find a few suspects. One is the sister who has the crush on Tom. Billy might be another, then there’s Tom’s wife, someone from the college, and the list goes on. He wasn’t nearly as popular as he thought.

There’s a missing woman dating back to when Tom was at the college. Some assumed she’d run away, some assumed she was dead. And then there’s Michael’s death. Why did he leave the house to Cat even after they were divorced?

This is the first in Cat Latimer Mystery, a new series that promises to be a good one. Fatality by Firelight will be available in March, 2017. Cat is someone you’d like to get to know. The potential rekindling of her romance with Seth will have readers wanting more. The writers’ retreats allow authors to work on their books—and maybe see a murder investigation up close—too close. The sub plots add to the mystery and carry over to the next book. Now, if we can just get Shauna to share some of her recipes!
