The Reedley College Tigers opened the 2013 football season by losing to College of the Sequoias 41-26 Saturday night at Reedley High School Stadium.

It looked at the the outset of the action that the Tigers would dominate the Giants, as they scored the first ten points of the game. But that was about it for any momentum for the Tigers, as the Giants scored the next twenty points and never really looked back.

It was a bad night for all three parts of the Tiger squad. The offense was spotty, with Fresno City College transfer Quarterback Trey Mitchell throwing several ill advised passes and having three of them picked-off. The defense had no answer for Sequoias Quarterback Raul Alvarez, who threw for 226 yards and four touchdowns. They also couldn’t contain running back Torry Clayton, who ran for 225 yards and a score. Even the Tiger special team unit struggled, with punter Patrick Greene having a punt blocked into the end zone, which resulted in an easy touchdown for the Giants.

All is not bad news for the Tigers. Running Back Efram Grimes gave the Reedley fans one big moment with a sixty eight yard touchdown run to highlight a night in which he gained 128 yards on the ground.

Coaches will tell you that the biggest improvement for a football team comes between week one and week two. Hopefully for the Tigers, they’ll get things straightened out in practice this week and be a little more consistent next Saturday afternoon against the San Joaquin Delta Mustangs in Stockton.
