by Matt Lubbers-Moore

I started writing this article for Kings River Magazine in March of 2021. And as much I enjoy writing the article, locating all the LGBTQ+ mysteries, and adding to my TBR, I am starting to take on adjunct teaching for a community college that will take more of my time. Therefore, March 2025 will be my last article, so if you are interested in writing an article about LGBTQ+ mysteries on a monthly or semi-monthly basis please reach out to Lorie at krlmagazine@gmail[dot]com.

On with the books!

Love Sins by Annette Mori
Out Sept. 1, 2024, Affinity Rainbow Publications
Third and final installment of the Next Generation series. Special Agent Amanda Forrester is perplexed by a call to join a homicide investigation. To Amanda’s increasing irritation, the daughter recognizes a picture of the last target and insinuates herself into the investigation. Amanda must join forces with a mysterious organization and the persistent woman she finds increasingly hard to resist.

Broken Bird by Gregory Ashe
Out Sept. 2, 2024, Hodgkin & Blount
This is the fourth of potentially six books in the Last Picks cozy series. It’s nearly Christmas, and Dashiell Dawson Dane already has enough on his plate: finding a present for his parents, coming up with excuses not to hang the Christmas lights, and finishing this stupid story he’s been writing (okay, maybe he needs to start writing it). On top of all that, Bobby has been acting…well, strange. The last thing Dash needs, in other words, is to play host when Marshall Crowe—celebrity author and, worse, a friend of Dash’s parents—comes to town. When Marshall dies in the middle of a public reading of his latest novel, Dash can’t bring himself to believe it was an accident, but he’s determined to stay away from the investigation. Until, that is, the prime suspect shows up on his doorstep, begging for his help.

The White Washed Tombs by Kwei Quartey
Out Sept. 3, 2024, Soho Crime
Although the main character is a straight woman and the victim was gay and dead at the start of the book, Quartey is an amazing author. Marcelo Tetteh, a 27-year-old LGBTQ+ activist, is butchered one night after being lured on a dating app to a deserted building site. With rampant homophobia in Ghana, Marcelo’s wealthy father doesn’t trust the Ghana Police Service to find the killer, so he goes to the Sowah Private Investigators Agency for help, partly because he still feels guilty for disowning his son when he came out.

Murder at the Matinee by Jamie West
Out Sept. 5, 2024, Brabinger
An unexpected phone call from a rival playwright puts Bertie center stage in another mystery. Can he help unravel the motive behind a mysterious newspaper advert that boldly declares a murder will take place during a show’s third act? There’s only one problem, there is no murder in the third act of the play! When a victim is discovered and the police are brought in, Bertie and Inspector Hugh Chapman get thrown awkwardly back together as they both work to find the killer.

Desert Reunion by Micheal Craft
Out Sept. 10, 2024, Questover Press
This is the third book in the cozy Dante and Jazz series. Zola Lorinsky, a long-retired Palm Springs decorator, has a chance to reignite her fabled career. But when she attends a family reunion hosted at one of Dante’s rentals, the celebration goes horribly awry. Bad enough that one of the guests is found dead that day. Even worse, the circumstances point to murder. And the evidence points to Zola.

Matrimony in Murder by Edale Lane
Out Sept. 10, 2024
On a lovely spring day, Jenna enjoys a walk in the park with her fiancée, Randi, and their dog when she’s called to investigate a fatal car crash. More than suspicious, the circumstances point to murder—a case the lieutenant detective has a week to solve before she and Randi’s marriage and honeymoon.

Jones by Gerri Hill
Out Sept. 17, 2024, Bella Books
Six friends. One annual getaway and one deadly secret. When a girl’s weekend in Port Aransas ends with a lifelong friend dead, Nina Evans’ world is shattered. As she grapples with the loss, she finds an unlikely ally in Detective Quinn Stewart—a former big-city cop now living stress-free doing beach patrol on the island. But peace and quiet is in short supply as they uncover the victim’s double life and a web of lies that puts Nina in the middle of the unraveling case.

Halls of Sorrow by Sean Elwood
Out Sept. 21, 2024
A lonely writer loses everything in an apartment fire. The life of a struggling artist crumbles after her husband’s death. Dreams of an ambitious realtor shatter when he’s suddenly fired. Sharing in their losses, emotionally weakened by their circumstances, this group of strangers finds themselves drawn together at the doorstep of a house whose calls cannot be ignored. Larger on the inside than it appears, this sinister dwelling beckons them to enter, ready to consume what remains of their fractured lives. Infinite corridors twist and turn, swallowing them whole and digesting their souls, feeding an endless emptiness which echoes with an insatiable hunger.

Everything Glittered by Robin Talley
Out Sept. 24, 2024, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
It’s 1927 and the strict laws of prohibition have done little to temper the roaring 20s nightlife, even in the nation’s capitol. Everyone knows the booze has never stopped flowing, especially amongst the rich and powerful, and 17-year-old Gertrude and her best friends Clara and Milly are determined to get a taste of freedom and liquor, propriety be damned. But after sneaking out of the Washington Female Seminary to visit a speakeasy, they return to discover that their controversial young headmistress, Mrs. Rose, has been murdered.

Deprog by Tina Horn
Out Sept. 24, 2024, Dead Sky Publishing
Meet Tate Debs, a hardboiled hard drinking leather loving dyke detective with an office in the back of Los Angeles’s last video store. Tate specializes in rescuing and deprogramming people from abusive groups with extreme beliefs — like the one Tate herself escaped, that believed in interdimensional travel and taboo ritual sex. When a femme named Vera, who may just be fatale, hires Tate to infiltrate a group of mystical hippies out in the desert, she must decide if Vera’ s charms are worth being re-traumatized. Soon, Tate must face her past out of devotion to the femme she may be falling for… and a single minded drive to avenge her family.
