Blake Jones & the Trike Shop Record Release Show

by Chelsea Jones, with a little help from her dad

I sat my father down recently to get the scoop on his upcoming free show slash record release show party.

My dad is Blake Jones, that one local musician who won’t quit, leader of Blake Jones & The Trike Shop, thereminist extraordinaire, Beatles fanatic, chocolate enjoyer, and all-round good guy.

Now, I may be biased because he’s my dad, but hear me out: this is a show you won’t want to miss. Plus, did I mention it’s free? This event will include a hefty sampling of the Central Valley’s many and diverse music acts, and what would a creative event in Fresno be without throwing in a little bit of belly dancing?

Blake Jones & the Trike Shop is celebrating the release of their new record “and still…”. The record’s lead-off singles were released in May and have been getting lots of attention–being played on broadcast and internet radio stations from Dublin to Syracuse, Chicago to Los Angeles, several outlets in the UK, and here in the Fresno area on Fresno’s KFSR 90.7 FM and KFCF 88.1 FM.

The official release date for the album is August 16, at which time it’ll be available for streaming and digital download on all of the usual services. CDs and LPs of the album will be available for the very first time at the show. This is their sixth full-length album.

In my dad’s words, when you grow up in Fresno, you sooner or later realize, if you want something fun to happen, you gotta make it happen. The other thing you learn, if you’re lucky, is that to make it happen, you gotta have community. Blake Jones has been lucky enough to fall in with people who like to organize the fun, or as they say in the corny old movies: “Let’s put on a show!”

The event the Trike Shop has put together is just that kind of show, bringing together folks of different disciplines and styles who all share that enthusiasm. It’s billed as Blake Jones & the Trike Shop’s “Record Release Party”, and as a “party”, there will be lots of folks joining in. It all takes place on Sunday, August 25 at Fulton 55 in downtown Fresno (875 Divisadero Street, Fresno, CA). Please keep in mind that the venue is 21+.

Acts will include the Terry Barnes Trio—a group that works primarily in Americana and folk grooves. They’ve played all across Central California, from the hills to the Coast and all points in between. Then Chelsea Jones (that’s me!) will share some of her songs—she’s part poet, part multimedia artist, part bird-rescuing person. Adding to the variety and cross-disciplinary entertainment, the ladies of Brazen Tassel Belly Dance will combine their intricate, expressive, swaying grooves with live drumming. Capping off the show will be our long-time friends in Sedan Delivery. They started out playing the clubs in Fresno’s Tower District in the 90s and have recently reformed to play what they describe as “loud guitar indie rock”. (Their drummer, Jim Connelly, says: “It’s four chords and a cloud of dust!”)

Sponsoring this eclectic get-together are local indie record stores Ragin’ Records and Tower District Records. Both promise to bring a couple of crates of LPs to bring you some between-the-bands record browsing fun.

And that’s what I mean by bringing the Fresno area folk under one big tent to have an interesting evening.

Keep in mind that it’s an early show—6 p.m. – 9 p.m., since some of us are not kids anymore, and have to get up the next day for work.

They will also be performing at the Reedley Library on Tuesday, August 13 at 6 p.m.
