I have been a fan of Marcia Muller’s Sharon McCone series from the very beginning–they were some of the first mysteries I ever read as an adult, and 33 books later they are just as good! Marcia Muller not only writes a great mystery, but she writes great characters. After all of these years I feel like I know Sharon, and the secondary characters are just as interesting and diverse.
In Someone Always Knows, Sharon and Hy, her PI partner and husband, have settled into a new home after losing their house to a fire. They are also settled into some nice new shared offices and have a crack team working for them. Things are good until a former colleague of Hy’s, Gage Renshaw, suddenly pops up in their lives. He is a shady trouble maker and criminal who everyone assumed was dead. Through much of the story Sharon and her team are trying to find out exactly what he is up to.
Fairly early in the book Hy is called off on a secret government mission, leaving Sharon to deal with Gage and their clients. She goes several days without hearing from him which doesn’t help her stress. While being harassed and followed by Gage, Sharon and her team take on a new assignment from wealthy developer Chad Kenyon–he wants them to secure a derelict squatter-overrun Victorian house that he has purchased. Soon someone is killed in the house, and Sharon begins to uncover some dangerous secrets connected to this property.
Not only does Muller provide the reader with an interesting mystery and great characters, but she also takes us on a tour of the Bay Area that makes you feel like you are there.
If you love a good mystery with an awesome and strong female main character, don’t miss this, or any of the other books in this series. I can’t wait for the next one!
