The Pie Mamas: Momma Knows Best

The Pie Mamas is the true definition of what it means to “keep it in the family.” Anna Covarrubias, alongside her two sisters, their mom and dad, her own children, and her nieces and nephews, are the driving force behind the Fresno-based bakery, The Pie Mamas.

Using their family’s recipes, The Pie Mamas is bringing homemade baked goods to Fresno and beyond, focusing on locally sourced produce, tasty ingredients like real butter, authentic maple syrup, and the most special ingredient … a whole lot of love. “People can feel and taste the love we put into our products,” says Anna. And with a variety of seasonal favorites, Anna knows what she’s talking about. Her mom, Maria, is the brains behind the cult-favorite sweet potato pie recipe, which Anna describes as “ice cream in a pie! It’s not too sweet, it’s delicious.” Their pineapple pie “tastes like vacation,” says Anna. And another popular item is their bourbon pecan, which the Pie Mamas proudly make with real maple syrup. When asked what makes this one a customer favorite, Anna shared, “It’s delicious and smooth. You can really tell the difference the maple syrup makes!”

The Pie Mamas love knowing their family recipes are bringing love to others. The pies are made fresh daily, and are available for events, catering, for custom orders, or for anyone with a hankering for a delicious pie. (Looking for an idea for Mother’s Day, readers?) What started out as a passionate hobby shared with close friends and family has turned into a thriving business that’s been running for the past year and a half years. Being rooted in love and friendship, those core values that started it all still ring true today. Anna’s children have grown up on this model, helping to run the registers at pop-up events and even helping to create the designs. Says Anna, “They are growing alongside the business. They are fully immersed in it!”

The sense of pride the family feels in their products is evident in so many ways. The family of bakers sources as many ingredients locally as possible, often visiting Fresno’s Sae Berry Farm and Bill Grady for their delicious produce. You can also find the Pie Mamas at local farmers markets, seeking out the freshest in-season produce available.

This thriving business is continuing to grow. Currently based in a home kitchen, they’ve set a goal of eventually opening a storefront. The Pie Mamas plan to continue bringing belly and soul-warming comfort to the Central Valley for years to come.
