Although she signed up for the Zombie Apocalypse Fun run, Clytemnestra “Clyde” Fortune is not having fun. Organized by her nephew Seth, the fun run will benefit the Ottawa County Animal Rescue League and coincides with Crystal Haven’s upcoming Founder’s Day celebration. Clyde returned to her Michigan hometown after finally leaving her job as a police officer in Ann Arbor, and she is learning to embrace both her and Crystal Haven’s psychic heritage. Gifted with an ability to locate lost items and sense forthcoming doom, Clyde has been forcefully nudged into obtaining a private investigator’s license by her aunt’s intention of forming a business together.
What Clyde never predicted was the return of her sister Grace after fifteen years in New York City. A failed reading of her talent with numbers caused their parents to lose their entire investment, and since then only Grace’s children have returned for visits to Crystal Haven. Clyde and her friends are wary of the reasons behind Grace’s sudden appearance, and unfortunately their concerns are just. During the charity run one of the costumed zombies remains far too dead, and while Derek Vaughn had a lecherous reputation that earned him more than his share of enemies, the fact that he was dressed very similarly to Grace’s husband has the Fortune family on alert.
While her boyfriend Mac is sidelined from his police investigations due to a conflict of interest, Clyde and her aunt have no restrictions preventing them from ensuring their family’s safety. Being hired by the Vaughn family gives them further entry into determining who had a hand in the death, as well as who may have wanted Grace out of Crystal Haven. Having long denied her psychic talents, Clyde relies on her professional skills as well as the emotional support from her family to help understand the threat facing her older sister.
This fourth book in A Family Fortune Mystery series continues to subtly incorporate paranormal elements into what is very much a small-town mystery setting. The very practical-minded Clyde is exasperated by, but completely adores, her self-proclaimed pet-psychic aunt and tarot card-reading mother. The tourist-driven town that markets itself as destination for the psychic-friendly, nevertheless retains a sense of realism that will have readers wishing they could make it their next vacation. The humor is smart and clever without being absurd, and the writing never strays from what is ultimately a very strong mystery. Whether her instincts are driven by training or by her inherited gifts, Clyde is an engaging heroine worthy of future investigations.
