DM Me for Murder is book three in Sarah E. Burr’s Trending Topics cozy mystery series, although readers just discovering this fun series can easily read this installment as a standalone.
Influencer and social media consultant Coco Cline is thrilled that mega-influencer LaTàge wants Center of Attention Consulting (Coco’s business) to handle her rebranding campaign. And LaTage even wants to fly out to Coco’s beachy town of Central Shores to meet face-to-face. This means big business for Coco…that is, until Coco is scheduled to meet LaTage in a mansion she recently rented, and Coco finds LaTage murdered.
The police clear Coco of suspicion right away, but the internet thinks differently, and there are many hashtags trending that accuse Coco of having something to do with this tragic death. When the police ask for Coco’s help understanding the online world of LaTage, Coco takes it as an opportunity to dig deeper into the case. With the help of her wonderful friends (the “Sleuth Squad”), she’s determined to save her reputation and find justice for LaTage.
Sarah gets this mystery started right off and the plot takes off at a fast pace, throwing red herrings about and leaving readers wondering just who we can trust. I was in for the ride and enjoyed watching Coco and her friends piece together the clues, especially the online clues that left police baffled. I loved how each friend contributed something to the resolution in their unique way. It made me wish for a Sleuth Squad of my own. The beachy September setting made for great armchair travel as well, and I could easily picture the town and feel the breezes from the water.
This is a light-hearted mystery that offers an entertaining look behind the curtain of social media influencers and also a look at long buried secrets in a small community.
