Julia Snowden moved home to Busman’s Harbor, Maine, to help save her family’s clambake business. Now that it’s out of the red but closed for the winter season, Julia has decided to stay in Maine while running the Gus, Too restaurant with her boyfriend Chris Durand. It has been a challenge sharing space with the landlord who runs the morning breakfast diner, but when Gus Farnham wakes them up on the early Thanksgiving weekend, it’s not to complain. It’s to ask why there’s a body in the refrigerator.

It seems that the dead stranger was last seen dining in Julia’s restaurant the night before, along with four other couples on the cold snowed-in night. Through periodic questionings by the local and state police, readers slowly begin to piece together the events that led to this group coming together on the cold November night. book

After being involved – though the Maine Major Crimes Unit might disagree – in helping to solve past incidents of murder in town, Julia is unable to prevent herself from looking into how her guests came to arrive at Gus, Too. In the tiny Maine town where those ‘From Away’ are looked upon with suspicion by the Yankee Mainers, Julia discovers that perhaps their visitors were not as unfamiliar with one another as they claim.

In this fourth book of A Maine Clambake Mystery series, author Ross lays out the story in a unique fashion that immediately catches up readers with past events while building up suspense for those eager to learn more. As in previous installments, the setting plays a crucial part not only by influencing events but also in helping to explain the characters. There is still a division between Maine year-round residents and the wealthy summer people, and it takes years, if not generations, to cross the divide. Julia herself is questioning whether her relationship with Chris has enough trust and love to last while running a struggling restaurant, even though she no longer doubts her decision to stay in Maine. An entirely surprising conclusion wraps up this smartly-plotted mystery whose heroine is intelligent and as appealing as the gorgeous Maine coast.

  7. Here’s a big shout out to KRL Magazine and the great book reviews and giveaways!
I went to a clambake in California, and enjoyed it tremendously. And to go to a clambake where clambakes were born would be marvelous, but I might not be able to get to Maine easily. I’ll enjoy it vicariously through ‘Fogged In.’ Am I lucky to win? Of course, hey!
