At the start of January, Valley Animal Center implemented a new social media strategy to find their adoptables loving homes. We have recently introduced a new Spawtlight page in order to feature pets that have had trouble getting adopted. These poor adoptables are often overlooked by potential adopters for one reason or another. The goal is not only to highlight these animals but also to educate the public as to why animals have behaviors some deem undesirable.
Ironically enough, bad behaviors are often due to prolonged stays in a shelter. For example, Sora (24673) is not dog friendly, so she needs to be the only pet in the household. You can imagine that would be a tough sell for any dog lover, but through our Spawtlight, we are able to display her soft and lovable side, as well as educating people about how long it can take for a dog like her to feel comfortable and bond with her new owner. We are pleased to report Sora is now in foster to adopt and on her way to be fully adopted. We are grateful that people are sharing, liking, and commenting on posts, helping many of our featured pets find opportunities to live outside a shelter environment. Many of our featured cats have found furever homes, including: Bast (26420), Captain Billy (27321), and Lyndzee (26890). Sierra (24348) had been in shelter for 1,007 days, but thanks to interest gathered from social media, she has hopefully found her furever home. Sierra struggled to eat and keep weight on,” says our dog care associate, Jackie Gonzalez, “but in her new surroundings, she is eating.”“I have definitely seen more interest in our animals,” said Jackie, “especially since we have been featuring them in reels.” Jackie is hopeful that this year will be a big year for the dog adoption center, and we can match all our adoptables with loving people.
Our animal care operations supervisor, Maritza Lopez, says, “The fact that there is serious interest in long-term adoptables like Sora and Sierra was unheard of.” Now the shelter doesn’t just get applications, but people come to see the animals in person. “It is very important that people keep engaging with our content,” Maritza says. “We want to reach as many people as possible.” We hope that you continue to share Valley Animal Shelter’s posts to as many of your friends as possible. It’s another great way to help us, in addition to donating or fostering. Every share is another chance for our adoptables to find their happily ever after.
